Keyboard Pedals on a Technical Rider: Sustain, Expression and Switching
Quick Answer
A keyboard rider should identify the exact instrument, each pedal's function and compatible model, the required input and any player settings. Sustain, expression and switching are different requirements. Confirm who supplies the pedals and cables, test them with the actual keyboard, and approve alternatives before dispatch.
Specify what each pedal must do, not simply how many pedals should arrive.
Three functions, three different questions
Sustain holds notes according to the instrument's response and selected sound. An expression pedal provides continuous control of an assigned parameter. A switching pedal performs a discrete action, such as advancing a programme, where the instrument supports it. One pedal is not automatically a substitute for another.
Ask the player which functions are needed on each keyboard. Two instruments may each need sustain; another setup may require sustain and expression on one board. Write the allocation beside the instrument, not as an unexplained total at the bottom of the rider.
Compatibility belongs to the instrument and input
Record the keyboard's exact model and generation, the pedal model and the intended socket. Connector shape alone does not establish compatibility. The instrument's manual determines supported pedal types, polarity options, assignments and any calibration procedure.
Yamaha describes the FC3A as supporting half-pedalling. That does not mean every keyboard can use that capability: the keyboard, input and settings must support the requested response. If half-pedal control matters, specify it rather than accepting a basic on/off replacement without discussion.
Make the physical setup usable
Pedal position, cable reach and access beneath the stand matter alongside electronic compatibility. Confirm whether the player sits or stands, how the pedals should be arranged and whether the performance involves moving between instruments. Route cables without putting strain on sockets or creating an obstruction.
The keyboard stands and benches guide addresses the space around the player's feet. A correct pedal trapped behind a stand brace is still an incomplete setup.
Carry, supply and test as one system
If the artist carries pedals, confirm models and arrival time rather than assuming they will work with a substituted keyboard. If locally supplied, request written confirmation of the pedal, cable and any separately charged accessories. Keep artist programming changes under the agreed technician or player responsibility.
At the agreed preparation or soundcheck stage, test sustain release, expression travel and switching behaviour with the relevant sounds. Record the accepted configuration for changeovers. Do not troubleshoot by repeatedly changing settings without noting the original state.
A useful rider line
An illustrative request is: keyboard model and generation; one compatible sustain pedal with half-pedal response required; one compatible expression pedal assigned to the player's requested function; artist to approve placement and operation at soundcheck. Add exact pedal models where required.
For The Backline Company enquiries, send the full keyboard and accessory requirement together so availability, inclusions and alternatives can be confirmed. The keyboard rental page is the equipment starting point, not a guarantee that every accessory is included.
Before Confirming
- Keyboard model, generation and number of instruments
- Pedal function, model, quantity and assigned instrument
- Half-pedal or other response requirements
- Cables, placement, carried/supplied split and spares
- Named owner for settings, testing and substitution approval
Frequently Asked Questions
Are sustain and expression pedals interchangeable?
No. They perform different functions and must be compatible with the instrument and its intended input. Specify both the function and an approved pedal model.
Does a matching plug mean a pedal will work?
No. Check the keyboard manufacturer's supported pedal types and settings. Connector appearance alone does not establish correct operation.
Are pedals included with a rented keyboard?
Confirm the package. List each required pedal and cable, identify artist-carried items, and obtain confirmation of supply and any separate charges.
